Asia Natee Virginia Thomas, a 27-year-old woman from Baltimore, was fatally shot on the evening of September 11, 2026, outside Morningside House of Friendship, a senior living community in the 7500 block of Old Telegraph Road in Hanover, Maryland. Anne Arundel County police received multiple reports of gunfire at approximately 8:50 p.m. When Western District officers arrived, they found Thomas suffering from gunshot wounds outside the building.
Officers immediately began providing emergency medical assistance until Anne Arundel County Fire Department personnel took over, but her injuries were too severe and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators learned that Thomas had just finished her shift at Morningside House of Friendship. She had remained outside the building and was sitting with 25-year-old Deontae Tranell Bryant of Aberdeen, Maryland. Police determined that Thomas and Bryant knew one another, although authorities did not publicly disclose the exact nature of their relationship. At some point while they were together, an altercation developed. Police said Bryant shot Thomas during that confrontation and then fled from the property on foot.
Witnesses reported seeing Bryant run south from the scene and disappear into a large wooded area near the senior living facility. Officers established a perimeter while the Anne Arundel County Police Special Operations Division Quick Response Team and canine teams were brought in to search for him. The effort expanded with assistance from the Maryland Transportation Authority Police Department and the Maryland Natural Resources Police. Ground officers and aerial resources searched the woodland for several hours, but Bryant was not located that night. Police eventually suspended the active search while keeping Western District patrol officers stationed around the facility and nearby wooded areas throughout the night.
Evidence gathered by homicide detectives overnight led authorities to return to the area for another search in daylight. Members of the Quick Response Team searched both the original area and additional wooded locations near the shooting scene. Bryant was found at approximately 1:30 p.m. the following day, not far from where Thomas had been killed. Police said he was dead from what investigators determined was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun was recovered near him.
Because Bryant died before police could take him into custody, there was no arrest, criminal charging proceeding, trial, or conviction connected with Thomas's killing. Anne Arundel County police classified their investigation as a homicide/suicide and continued working to establish the circumstances that led to the confrontation. Authorities had not released a motive or further explanation for the dispute, and the precise nature of the relationship between Thomas and Bryant remained under investigation.
Morningside House officials said the shooting was a heartbreaking loss and expressed sympathy for Thomas's family, loved ones and coworkers. The company said residents of the senior living community were not involved in the incident and that it was cooperating fully with the police investigation. Investigators continued asking anyone with information about the events surrounding Thomas's death to contact the Anne Arundel County Police Homicide Unit as authorities worked to determine what preceded the fatal encounter.
