Tamela D. Dutcher, a 55-year-old woman from Delaware, Ohio, was fatally shot inside her Bean Oller Road home shortly after midnight on August 14, 2026. A 911 call came from the residence reporting that Dutcher had been shot, and responding deputies and emergency personnel found her suffering from gunshot injuries. She was rushed to a hospital, but died several hours later.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisted Delaware County sheriff’s detectives with processing the scene as what initially was described as a possible homicide quickly developed into a murder investigation.
Court records later alleged that Christian Evans, 20, and his roommate Dajameous Payne, 21, entered the home and shot Dutcher. Investigators further alleged that when Dutcher’s husband, Neil King, attempted to come to her aid, another shot was fired in his direction but missed him. The two men then allegedly fled the residence. Detectives came to believe the shooting was not a random home invasion, but instead was connected directly to Dutcher’s daughter, 18-year-old Bryanna Dutcher, who was secretly dating Evans.
According to the probable-cause affidavits, Bryanna initially told investigators that she had been cleaning in another room when the shooting occurred and that she had not seen anyone enter the house. She suggested that a former friend of Tamela who allegedly owed money might be a possible person of interest. As investigators continued questioning her, however, they said portions of her account changed. She eventually acknowledged that Evans was her boyfriend and said that her parents were unaware of the relationship because she believed they would strongly disapprove of it. Bryanna also told detectives that she had argued with Tamela earlier that day about cleaning and later contacted Evans to complain about the disagreement.
Investigators said the evidence recovered from Bryanna’s cellphone dramatically changed the direction of the case. A forensic examination allegedly uncovered deleted exchanges between Bryanna and Evans that prosecutors believe showed preparations being made before the shooting. According to the affidavit, the messages discussed where people inside the house were located, the use of gloves, eliminating both parents at the same time, firearms, forensic evidence and methods of disposing of evidence. Investigators said one exchange appeared to have Bryanna telling Evans that Tamela was in the living room while King was in the basement. Prosecutors have characterized the messages as evidence that the killing was planned in advance, although Bryanna has denied participating in a plan to kill her mother.
Detectives also developed evidence they say connected Evans and Payne to the area surrounding the crime. Traffic-camera information showed Evans’ Chevrolet Camaro traveling south near Columbus Pike and East Powell Road at approximately 12:44 a.m., roughly 15 to 20 minutes after the shooting. Cameras subsequently tracked the vehicle east through Ohio toward West Virginia during the early morning hours. Investigators said Evans’ father had access to location information that placed Evans near the Dutcher residence around the time of the shooting and also showed detectives a message from his son indicating that he had seriously messed up.
When detectives later located the Camaro back at Evans’ Delaware residence, they watched Evans leave carrying a garbage bag and place it into a dumpster. Investigators recovered a gun holster and two pairs of black pants from the discarded bag. Other items, including electronics, additional clothing, cellphones and another gun holster, were seized from the apartment and vehicle. A neighbor’s outdoor camera also reportedly recorded Evans and Payne leaving their residence on the night of the killing dressed in black clothing, with each appearing to wear a glove. Detectives subsequently blocked the Camaro and took both men into custody. Neither agreed to give investigators a formal statement after being arrested, although the affidavit reported that Evans made a statement expressing remorse for what he had done.
Evans and Payne were initially arrested on murder charges, while Bryanna was first arrested for obstruction of justice based on allegations that she repeatedly gave investigators false or misleading information that delayed their identification of suspects. By August 17, prosecutors had also filed a murder charge against Bryanna after investigators recovered the cellphone evidence. All three appeared from the Delaware County Jail for initial proceedings, where bonds of $3 million each were imposed.
The case became more serious on August 20, when a Delaware County grand jury indicted Bryanna Dutcher, Christian Evans and Dajameous Payne on one count each of aggravated murder. Prosecutors alleged that Tamela’s death was caused purposely and with prior calculation and design. The indictments replaced the need for preliminary hearings that had been scheduled for August 24.
Evans and Payne were arraigned separately on August 21. Payne entered a plea of not guilty. Evans also contested the charge, with his defense entering a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity and raising concerns about his mental competency and reported history of mental-health problems. The judge declined to reduce either defendant’s $3 million bond. Evans was given an October 5 final pretrial date and an October 20 trial date, while Payne’s final pretrial was scheduled for October 12 with trial set for October 27.
Bryanna appeared in Delaware County Common Pleas Court on August 24 and pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder. Judge Marianne Hemmeter maintained her $3 million bond and scheduled a final pretrial for October 19 and a trial for November 3. The obstruction allegation arose from investigators’ claims about her statements immediately following the killing, while the aggravated-murder prosecution is based largely on the state’s contention that the recovered communications demonstrate advance planning and assistance in the attack.
Tamela held a PhD and had spent years working with patients and families. In 2002, she and Daniel L. Davis co-authored a peer-reviewed paper in the International Journal of Adolescent Medicine and Health examining violent and homicidal behavior among adolescents and possible therapeutic approaches. The unusual connection between that work and the allegations now surrounding her death brought national attention to a case that began as an overnight shooting call at a quiet Delaware County home.
As of August 25, 2026, no trial or conviction has occurred. Bryanna Dutcher, Christian Evans and Dajameous Payne remain defendants accused of aggravated murder, and the allegations concerning how the killing was planned and carried out have not yet been proven beyond a reasonable doubt in court. The criminal proceedings are continuing in Delaware County Common Pleas Court.
