In the early hours of a summer morning in Columbus, Ohio, the life of 22-year-old Demonty Carter was tragically cut short. On July 28, 2026, around 2:10 a.m., Columbus police were called to an apartment in the 2700 block of Brandy Drive, near Refugee Road, following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found Carter unresponsive and suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 2:54 a.m. The initial investigation pointed to a violent altercation with a known individual, shattering the quiet of the night and leaving a community in shock.

The motive for the fatal shooting is believed to be related to domestic issues. According to an affidavit, 23-year-old Darren Cunningham Jr. allegedly forced his way into an apartment in search of his ex-girlfriend. An altercation ensued between Cunningham, his former partner, and Demonty Carter. During this confrontation, Cunningham reportedly shot Carter multiple times before fleeing the scene. The following day, the Columbus Division of Police issued a warrant for Cunningham's arrest in connection with Carter's death.

Nearly a week after the shooting, on August 3, 2026, Darren Cunningham Jr. voluntarily surrendered to authorities at the Columbus police headquarters, accompanied by his legal counsel. He was subsequently charged with murder. During a court appearance the following morning, a judge set his bond at $1 million. The case against Cunningham is in its early stages, and as of this time, there have been no conviction or sentencing details released, as the legal process is ongoing. The investigation into the death of Demonty Carter remains active as the community awaits further developments and the pursuit of justice for the young man whose life was abruptly ended.
