On the evening of May 28, 2026, Fernando Guerrero Taveras, a 74-year-old man, was fatally shot on the front porch of a home in the 5100 block of 3rd Street in the Cementon area of Whitehall Township, Pennsylvania. Emergency responders found him with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso, leg, and chin, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Lehigh County Coroner later ruled his death a homicide caused by the gunshot injuries.
The investigation into the shooting led police to 17-year-old Elijah Ceballos, who lived in the same neighborhood. Surveillance video from the scene reportedly captured a person identified as Ceballos on the porch, pointing a gun at Guerrero Taveras before walking away. Investigators recovered 16 spent 9mm shell casings from the street and the patio where the shooting occurred. A significant breakthrough in the case came when Ceballos's own father contacted detectives, expressing his belief that his son was involved. He consented to a search of their home on Main Street, where authorities found clothing matching what the suspect wore in the surveillance footage and a Sar Arms 9mm pistol with an empty 17-round magazine.
Following the discovery of the evidence, Elijah Ceballos was taken into custody and subsequently charged as an adult with criminal homicide, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a firearm by a minor, and possession of a weapon. He was arraigned on May 29, 2026, where a judge denied him bail, and he was ordered to be held at the Lehigh County Jail. Authorities have stated that they believe the attack was targeted, although a motive has not been publicly released. The case is being investigated by the Whitehall Township Police Department, the Lehigh County Homicide Task Force, and the Lehigh County District Attorney's Office. A preliminary hearing for Ceballos was scheduled for June 3, 2026, as the legal process against him began.
