Sharon Harwood Grant, a 66-year-old woman from Fairview, North Carolina, was found dead inside a home on Ashworth Drive during a welfare check on the evening of May 7, 2026. She was discovered alongside Travis Eugene Grant, 41, and Kimberly Michelle Grant, 42. Authorities identified Travis and Kimberly as a married couple and Sharon as Travis Grant’s mother, making the deaths a family triple homicide that stunned the Fairview community.
The discovery came after relatives and loved ones said they had not heard from the family. Deputies had reportedly been asked to check on the home more than once in the days before the bodies were found, including earlier welfare checks where they did not have enough legal grounds to force entry. On the evening of May 7, deputies returned to the residence, entered the home, and found Sharon, Travis, and Kimberly dead from gunshot wounds. Investigators later indicated the victims may have been dead for several days before they were discovered, and arrest warrant information alleged the killings may have occurred on or about May 1.
As detectives began piecing together what had happened inside the home, they determined that 16-year-old Star Melody Grant, who lived at the residence and was the daughter of Travis and Kimberly Grant and granddaughter of Sharon Grant, was missing. That quickly shifted the case from a death investigation into a search that crossed state lines. Authorities believed Star Grant may have traveled to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, with 28-year-old Devan Oneal Loving, a Buncombe County man.
Law enforcement agencies in North Carolina and Tennessee worked together to locate the pair. With help from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and the Gatlinburg Police Department, investigators tracked Star Grant and Devan Loving to a hotel in Gatlinburg. They were taken into custody on May 8, 2026, shortly after the bodies were found in Fairview. Authorities said there was no ongoing threat to the public after the arrests.
Star Grant and Devan Oneal Loving were each charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the deaths of Sharon Harwood Grant, Travis Eugene Grant, and Kimberly Michelle Grant. Because of the severity of the allegations, Star Grant was charged as an adult. Arrest warrant details alleged that she conspired with Loving to commit the murders before they were carried out. Loving also faced an additional child-abduction-related charge because Star Grant was a minor.
Both suspects initially remained in Tennessee after their arrests, but they later waived extradition so they could be returned to North Carolina. Star Grant was brought back to Buncombe County and served with murder and conspiracy warrants, then placed in a juvenile detention facility. Loving was also expected to be returned to Buncombe County after waiving extradition. Reports from court proceedings said Star Grant was denied bond, and Loving also appeared in court after his return.
