Wanda Lee Walkowicz was an 11-year-old white girl who vanished on the early evening of April 2, 1973, after a simple errand that should have taken only minutes. She had left home on Rochester’s east side to pick up groceries for her mother, reached the corner store, made her purchase, and then set off on foot for the walk back. She never came through the door with the bag in her hands, and as the hours stretched into night, her family’s worry hardened into dread.
