In the quiet community of Corning, California, the afternoon of April 9, 2026, was shattered by an act of violence that claimed the life of 30-year-old Michael Rodriguez. A resident of the nearby city of Orland, he was discovered on the top landing of a staircase at the Salado Orchard Apartments on Toomes Avenue, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound to his upper torso. Law enforcement was called to the scene at approximately 12:30 PM, where they found Rodriguez.
Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a narcotics connection, with authorities dismissing initial thoughts of it being a gang-related incident. In the days following the shooting, Corning police identified a suspect, leading to a public appeal for information on the whereabouts of 36-year-old Rafael Ruvalcaba, who also went by the alias "Sicko." The search for Ruvalcaba culminated in his arrest on a Monday in the neighboring city of Orland. The Tehama County Sheriff's SWAT Team apprehended him at an apartment on Newport Avenue. He was taken into custody and is being held without the possibility of bail.
