On April 25, 2026, Chicago Police Officer John Bartholomew, a 38-year-old male, tragically lost his life in a brazen act of violence inside a hospital. A ten-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, Bartholomew was a dedicated family man, survived by his wife and three children. The events that culminated in Officer Bartholomew's death began
earlier that day with the arrest of 26-year-old Alphanso Talley in connection with an armed robbery at a Family Dollar store. Following his arrest, Talley complained of difficulty breathing, claiming to have ingested drugs, which necessitated a visit to Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital. Officer Bartholomew and his 57-year-old partner escorted Talley to the facility for medical evaluation.
At the hospital, while being prepared for a CT scan, the situation took a horrific turn. As Officer Bartholomew uncuffed Talley to allow for the medical procedure, Talley allegedly retrieved a 10 mm handgun that he had concealed under a blanket placed over him. He then opened fire, striking Officer Bartholomew in the head and his partner in the chin. Despite the immediate medical attention available, Officer Bartholomew's injuries were fatal. His partner was left in critical condition, fighting for his life.
In the chaotic aftermath of the shooting, Talley attempted to flee the hospital. He was reportedly naked as he ran from the scene, having taken an ID badge from a hospital employee and shot through a glass door to make his escape. His freedom was short-lived, however, as he was apprehended a short time later, discovered hiding under a nearby porch. The handgun allegedly used in the shooting was recovered at the time of his capture.
Alphanso Talley, who has a significant criminal history including prior convictions for robbery and aggravated battery of a peace officer, was subsequently charged with a multitude of felonies, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and armed robbery. At the time of the incident, Talley was on electronic monitoring for a previous carjacking and robbery but had violated the terms of his release. During his court appearance, where he reportedly smirked and laughed, a judge ordered him to be detained in jail pending trial, deeming him a danger to the community. An accomplice in the initial armed robbery was also later taken into custody.
