A simmering dispute at a family party in Crete, Illinois, erupted into violence in the early morning hours of Sunday, March 29, 2026, leaving 20-year-old David Velazquez of Hammond, Indiana, dead and two others critically injured. The gathering, an adult birthday party, was being held at a residence on the 27000 block of South State Line Road. At approximately 1:00 a.m., multiple 911 calls reported a large fight and possible shooting at the location.
When Will County Sheriff's deputies arrived, they discovered a chaotic scene with a large crowd. Three individuals had sustained gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services were administered at the scene before the three victims were transported to area hospitals. David Velazquez, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, was taken to a hospital in Olympia Fields, where he was later pronounced dead. The two other victims remained in critical condition.
Investigators with the Will County Sheriff's Office believe the shooting was a domestic incident and have stated that there is no threat to the general public. As of late March 2026, authorities were still conducting interviews and had not yet filed any charges in connection with the shooting. No suspects had been publicly identified or taken into custody.
David Velazquez was born in Chicago, Illinois, on April 5, 2005. A 2023 graduate of Hammond Central High School, he was remembered by loved ones for his joyful and outgoing personality, strong work ethic, and caring nature. He is survived by his parents, numerous siblings, his girlfriend, and a large extended family. Funeral services were scheduled to be held in early April 2026.
