On the evening of November 8, 1974, 17-year-old Debra "Debi" Kent, a female, was attending a play with her parents at Viewmont High School in Bountiful, Utah. During the performance, she left to pick up her younger brother from a nearby roller-skating rink. She never arrived. When her parents discovered their car was still in the school parking lot after the play, they knew something was terribly wrong.
A search of the area later uncovered a significant clue: a handcuff key.
Witnesses at the high school reported hearing screams from the parking lot around the time Debi disappeared. One person also saw a light-colored Volkswagen Beetle speeding away from the school. The discovery of the handcuff key was a crucial link to another crime that occurred the very same day. A young woman named Carol DaRonch had escaped an abduction attempt in Murray, Utah, and the key found at the high school matched the handcuffs her attacker had used.
The investigation into Debi's disappearance and the attempted kidnapping of Carol DaRonch eventually led police to a law student named Ted Bundy. DaRonch was able to identify Bundy as her assailant, which led to his arrest and conviction for her attempted kidnapping. While police strongly suspected Bundy was also responsible for Debi Kent's disappearance, they initially lacked sufficient evidence to charge him in her case. A search of his apartment, however, did turn up a brochure from a Bountiful recreation center, placing him in the area.
For years, Debi's family held out hope, leaving a porch light on for her. The case remained a painful mystery until January 1989, just before his execution, when Ted Bundy confessed to the murders of numerous women, including Debi Kent. He told investigators that he had abducted her from the Viewmont High School parking lot, taken her to his home, and later disposed of her remains in the Fairview Canyon area.
Following Bundy's confession, authorities searched the area he indicated. Among hundreds of animal bones, they found a single human kneecap. At the time, DNA technology was not advanced enough to confirm its identity, but the patella was given to Debi's family as a form of closure. The case officially remained open. Years later, in 2015, a renewed look at the case led investigators to re-examine the bone. Advanced DNA testing confirmed that the patella belonged to Debra Kent, finally providing scientific proof of her fate and officially closing the case. The rest of her remains have never been recovered.
