In the early hours of February 10, 2026, a white male named Vasyl Shvets, a 27-year-old Ukrainian refugee, was killed in Cleveland, Ohio. Shvets, who worked as a Lyft driver, was found shot in his vehicle in the 2400 block of East 84th Street at approximately 12:45 a.m. after his car crashed. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Shvets had come to the United States from Ukraine seeking a better life.
The initial investigation into the homicide led detectives to a person in Arizona who had apparently ordered the Lyft ride. However, with the assistance of the Phoenix Police Homicide Unit, Cleveland investigators determined that this individual was not involved in the shooting. The focus of the investigation then shifted back to Cleveland.
On February 16, 2026, the Cleveland Division of Police announced a significant development in the case with the arrest of two suspects. The suspects, both 17-year-old boys, were taken into custody after search warrants were executed on the city's east side. During the arrests, authorities also recovered two firearms. The identities of the juvenile suspects have not been publicly released. Charges against the two teenagers are pending.
