In the quiet desert community of Llano, California, the life of Carl Grillmair, a 67-year-old male, was abruptly ended on the morning of February 16, 2026. Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department were dispatched to his home on 165th Street East around 6:10 a.m. following a report of an assault with a deadly weapon. There, on his own front porch, they discovered Grillmair suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. Paramedics who arrived at the scene were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the homicide quickly led to a suspect. While at the scene of the shooting, deputies also responded to a carjacking that had occurred nearby. The individual apprehended in connection with the carjacking, 29-year-old Freddy Snyder, was subsequently identified as the suspect in Grillmair's death. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office has since charged Snyder with murder, carjacking, and burglary.
Further investigation revealed a prior interaction between the victim and the alleged perpetrator. It was reported that Grillmair had previously contacted law enforcement on December 20, 2025, to have Snyder removed from his property for trespassing. Although Snyder had left by the time deputies arrived, he was later arrested for weapons violations. Snyder had also been arrested in Palmdale on December 20, 2025, on suspicion of carrying a loaded firearm, a charge that was later dismissed for unknown reasons, leading to his release on his own recognizance on December 23, 2025.
Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for the killing or the exact nature of the relationship between Grillmair and Snyder, if any. Snyder is currently being held in custody with bail set at $2 million. His arraignment is scheduled for March 26 in Lancaster.
