In the early hours of New Year's Day in Des Moines, Iowa, a dispute at a downtown apartment ended in the city's first homicide of 2026. Tony Alexander Young, a 30-year-old male, was shot and critically injured before 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 1, 2026. The incident occurred at an apartment in the 300 block of Court Avenue, a central hub of the city's entertainment district.
First responders rushed Young to a local hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to the identification of a suspect. Police arrested 31-year-old Jordan Isaac Carmi in connection with the fatal shooting. Evidence gathered by detectives indicated that Carmi shot Young during a dispute that took place at Carmi's residence. Following his arrest, Carmi was charged with first-degree murder. The investigation continued as authorities worked to piece together the events that led to the deadly confrontation.
As the investigation progressed, detectives and crime scene investigators were led to Walnut Creek. A search of the waterway near the North Valley Drive Bridge resulted in the recovery of a handgun, believed to be connected to the shooting. While the primary suspect was in custody, the investigation was still considered ongoing. Around the same time as the shooting, another individual arrived at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, though police did not immediately confirm if the two incidents were related. An obituary for Young mentioned he was a graduate of Lincoln High School who enjoyed rap music, dancing, and football, and was a father to a son.
