On January 2, 2026, the community of Waverly, Tennessee, was shaken by the discovery of a tragic event that claimed the life of 4-year-old Arius Thompson. The young boy was found deceased in his home from gunshot wounds. Arius was a joyful child, born on February 27, 2021, who loved playing with his cat, Pumpkin, riding his tricycle, and exploring nature.
Deputies from the Humphreys County Sheriff's Office made the grim discovery during a welfare check at the family's residence on East
Little Richland Road. Inside the home, they found not only Arius but also his 13-year-old brother, Isiah Johnson, and his 88-year-old great-grandmother, Evelyn C. Johnson, all of whom had been fatally shot. The fourth deceased individual was identified as Arius's mother, 32-year-old Heather Thompson.
The investigation into the four deaths quickly pointed towards a murder-suicide. Authorities have stated that they believe Heather Thompson, a nurse at a local hospital, was responsible for the deaths of her two sons and grandmother before taking her own life. Investigators found a weapon at the scene and have indicated that there is no evidence to suggest the involvement of any outside suspects. The motive for the tragedy has not been released. The children's father, Jeremiah Thompson, who was separated from Heather, expressed his profound grief online, stating his soul was "shattered" by the loss of his sons.
