In Horn Lake, Mississippi, a verbal and physical altercation on the evening of January 3, 2026, tragically escalated, leading to the death of 48-year-old Kevin Dewayne “Hoss” Durrett. The incident occurred in the 5800 block of Shannon Drive, where an initial dispute between Durrett and another man turned deadly. While not a participant in the original fight, 21-year-old Nathaniel Harvey allegedly fired a gun, striking Durrett in the back.
Emergency services responded to reports of
gunfire around 8:05 p.m. and found Durrett with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Durrett, a resident of Byhalia, Mississippi, was known for his work in home improvements and his passion for riding motorcycles. He was a patriotic man who founded the Mississippi chapter of the Motorcycle Awareness Campaign and was a member of Unified Christian American Patriots, an organization focused on gun safety.
Following an investigation into the shooting, authorities identified Nathaniel Harvey of Horn Lake as the suspect. He was taken into custody and has been charged with the murder of Kevin Durrett. Harvey is currently being held at the DeSoto County Jail on a $1 million bond as the investigation into the fatal shooting continues.
