Avery Newman, a 36-year-old Black man, was fatally shot on the evening of January 11, 2026, in the Manchester Square neighborhood of Los Angeles. The incident was a mass shooting that left four other individuals wounded. The Los Angeles County coroner's office later confirmed Newman's identity and ruled his death a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds.
The shooting occurred outside a Louisiana Fried Chicken restaurant located on Manchester Boulevard near Normandie Avenue.
According to police, Newman and the other victims were waiting for their food when two suspects approached them on foot and opened fire. After the attack, the assailants fled the scene, heading westbound on Manchester Boulevard in a vehicle.
Emergency services transported Newman and three other victims to a local hospital, where Newman was pronounced dead. A fifth victim of the shooting was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle. The surviving victims were reported to be in stable condition.
The Los Angeles Police Department is actively investigating the shooting and is searching for the two unidentified suspects. While the motive for the attack remains unclear, early indications from a violence prevention group suggest that it was not gang-motivated. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and the investigation is ongoing.
