On December 12, 2025, police in St. Paul, Minnesota, discovered the body of 29-year-old Shaniya Thompson inside her apartment on the 500 block of Broadway Street in the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood. Officers had been dispatched to the residence around 4:15 p.m. following a call from a family member concerned about her safety. Upon arrival, they found Thompson deceased from a gunshot wound to the head.
Investigators determined that the shooting had likely occurred the previous day, December 11, during a visit by the father of her children. A firearm was recovered at the scene, and an investigation immediately began into the circumstances surrounding her death.
According to court documents, 33-year-old Wesley Koboi had arrived at the apartment on Thursday to celebrate one of their children's birthdays. Witnesses and the children later reported that an argument ensued between Koboi and Thompson. Koboi allegedly ordered the five children into a bedroom, after which they heard a scream followed by a loud thud. He then reportedly gathered the children, told them they were leaving, and drove them approximately eight hours to his mother's home in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After dropping them off under the pretense of a surprise holiday visit, he left in his brother's vehicle without disclosing his destination.
A manhunt for Koboi ensued, involving coordination between local police and federal agencies. Investigators tracked his movements across state lines and discovered he had crossed the international border into Canada on foot at the Blue Water Bridge near Port Huron. On December 16, 2025, authorities located and arrested Koboi at Toronto Pearson International Airport, where he had reportedly booked a flight to Mexico. Following his capture, he was held pending extradition to Minnesota to face charges. Prosecutors have charged him with two counts of second-degree murder in connection with Thompson's death.
