Officers from the Balch Springs Police Department received calls reporting gunfire around 8:23 p.m. and were dispatched to the 12000 block of Quail Drive. When first responders arrived at the scene, they discovered the victim, identified as 20-year-old male Marcus Lee Jones Jr., lying on the ground with apparent gunshot wounds. Emergency personnel transported him to Dallas Regional Medical Center, but despite medical intervention, he was pronounced dead at 9:34 p.m.
Detectives immediately began processing the scene, relying on witness statements and surveillance footage to reconstruct the events leading up to the violence. According to those present, Jones had approached a silver 2021 Hyundai Accent and handed a backpack to an individual inside the car.
