Zamarkus Kentrell Brister, a 22-year-old male was fatally shot on November 26, 2025, after an altercation inside Reagans Corner Convenience Store in the Kokomo community of Marion County, Mississippi. According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the store, located at 640 U.S. Highway 98, around 1 p.m. after reports of gunfire inside the business.
When they arrived, they found two people wounded, including Brister, who was identified as being from Foxworth, Mississippi. Brister was taken from the scene to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead from his injuries.
Deputies also found 19-year-old Verkese Dezmond Conerly of Tylertown, Mississippi, suffering from a gunshot wound. Investigators said that a dispute between the individuals involved escalated into an exchange of gunfire inside the store, turning what began as an altercation into a deadly shooting in a public space. Both wounded men received initial treatment from medical personnel on scene before being transported to medical facilities, but only Conerly survived. The shooting was recorded by national gun-violence tracking sites as a fatal incident in Kokomo, underscoring that Brister’s death was part of a broader pattern of firearm violence being documented across Mississippi.
After he was treated, Conerly was taken into custody by Marion County authorities. A news release and subsequent booking records show that he was booked on November 26, 2025, on a charge of murder along with three counts of aggravated assault, reflecting allegations that his actions not only caused Brister’s death but also placed others in danger during the gunfire inside the store. Investigators also arrested 17-year-old Coreyon Lamark Brister of Hattiesburg, who was charged with manslaughter and two counts of aggravated assault in connection with the same incident, indicating that law enforcement believes more than one person bears criminal responsibility for the deadly confrontation. Authorities have stated that the investigation into the shooting remains ongoing, and as of the latest available reports no additional suspects beyond Conerly and Coreyon Brister had been publicly identified.
