Jewel Harden, a 76-year-old woman from Hephzibah, Georgia, had just left church services and made a stop at the Sprint gas station on Edgefield Road. On that Sunday afternoon, North Augusta Public Safety officers were dispatched to
the gas station around 3 p.m. following reports of a shooting. The first officer to arrive on the scene was confronted by an armed man in the parking lot. When the suspect raised an AR-style pistol, the officer fired, striking the man. The injured suspect was then transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.
Upon further investigation inside the gas station, officers made a grim discovery. They found Jewel Harden and 33-year-old Thomas B. Lilly Jr. of Williston, South Carolina, both of whom had been fatally shot. The Aiken County Coroner's Office later confirmed their identities and that they had died at the scene.
