On the morning of October 30, 2025, a distressing scene unfolded on Interstate 5 in rural Gold Hill, Oregon, leading to the death of Steven Jason Worthington, a 47-year-old White male from Shady Cove. Emergency dispatchers began receiving multiple calls around 8:01 a.m. about an injured man, later identified as Worthington, attempting to flag down vehicles for help near mile marker 42.5.
Paramedics and Jackson County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to the location.
Despite their life-saving efforts, Worthington’s injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:36 a.m. The incident prompted the closure of a lane on the southbound side of the interstate as investigators began to piece together the events that led to his death. The investigation revealed that the homicide likely occurred in the vicinity of Old Stage Road and Galls Creek Road.
A search for a suspect and an associated vehicle was launched, involving multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Oregon State Police and the Jackson County Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit. The search culminated around 10:00 a.m. when dispatchers received a tip about a suspicious person in the 1000 block of Galls Creek Road.
Responding deputies and detectives identified the individual as Michael Lloyd Balestra Jr., a 34-year-old resident of Gold Hill. Balestra was taken into custody and has since been charged with several crimes, including second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, first-degree theft, unlawful use of a weapon, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and felon in possession of a firearm. He was booked into the Jackson County Jail. Authorities have stated that they believe the suspect has been apprehended and there is no further danger to the public.
