In an act of selfless friendship, 32-year-old Emma Louise Sims traveled from her home in Taos, New Mexico, to Durango, Colorado, in October 2025 to support her best friend, Shelby Campbell, who was going through a difficult separation. This compassionate journey ended in a devastating act of violence that claimed both of their lives.
On the evening of October 7, 2025, in the 2400 block of North Arroyo Drive in Durango, Shelby's estranged husband, 32-year-old Bradley Campbell, confronted the two women. He opened fire, shooting both Emma and Shelby before turning the gun on himself. All three were transported to Mercy Hospital with critical gunshot wounds.
Emma Sims succumbed to her injuries on October 8, 2025, in Colorado Springs, surrounded by her loved ones. Her friend, Shelby Campbell, also tragically passed away from her injuries. The suspect, Bradley Campbell, remained on life support for a time before he also died from his self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators believe this was a case of domestic violence and have indicated that there are no other suspects involved in the double murder-suicide.
