Raul Medrano, 54, a Latino man, was identified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner after he was pronounced dead on October 13, 2025; the coroner listed his case as 2025-16109. That Monday began with a burst of chaos near the 14000 block of Pioneer Boulevard.
Just after midnight, Medrano was wounded outside a PLS Check Cashers location and managed to make it into a nearby business, bleeding from the upper body as people inside called for help. Paramedics rushed him to a hospital, where doctors began surgery; later that day, authorities confirmed he did not survive. The scene coalesced along a corridor of late-night storefronts and streetlights, a place where ordinary errands turned suddenly into an emergency.
Detectives said the violence unfolded as Medrano was returning to his vehicle after a transaction at the check-cashing business. Three men approached him near his car, robbed him, and tried to steal the vehicle. A gunshot cut through the confrontation, and Medrano collapsed outside the business before being taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Neighbors and customers described the shock of a daylight routine shattered, as investigators worked to piece together the minutes before the shooting.
In the days that followed, authorities asked for the public’s help to find the assailants. The three men fled toward Rosecrans Avenue and, as of the latest updates from investigators, remained at large.
