On March 29, 1997, Pete Lopez, a 50-year-old optical technician employed at White Sands Missile Range, was found dead near the St. Jude Shrine west of Socorro, New Mexico. He had been shot multiple times, and his body was discovered by passersby early that morning. Despite an investigation, the motive for his murder remains unclear, as nothing was stolen from him, and he had no known enemies.
