In the late hours of a Saturday night in Lawrenceville, Virginia, a verbal dispute escalated into a fatal encounter that ended the life of 25-year-old Ty'el Daveon Jones. On August 2, 2025, deputies from the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office were called to the Cedar Grove area of Lawrenceville around 11 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Jones outside a residence with a gunshot wound.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the death of the Black male, a graduate of Brunswick High School, quickly pointed to a preceding argument. Investigators determined that Jones and another individual had been involved in a 'verbal encounter' at a different location before moving to the Jones family home where the shooting occurred. The argument turned physical and ultimately led to a shootout involving multiple firearms. Multiple cartridges were found at the scene, indicating the chaotic nature of the final moments of Ty'el's life.
In the days following the incident, authorities identified 54-year-old Tristan Gautier Bell of Lawrenceville as a person involved in the fatal shooting. A search warrant was executed at Bell's residence, and he was taken into custody without incident. Bell was subsequently charged with murder and is being held without bond at the Meherrin River Regional Jail.
The investigation is ongoing, and officials have indicated that additional charges could be filed against Bell or others. Investigators believe the shooting was not a random act of violence. As the legal process moves forward, Bell's next court appearance is scheduled for October 1 in Brunswick County General District Court.
