In the quiet early morning hours of June 10, 2025, in the small community of Aneth, Utah, on the Navajo Nation, the life of Winston Billie was tragically cut short. The silence of the pre-dawn hours was shattered by the sound of gunfire, an event that would lead to a swift investigation and an arrest.
According to a woman identified as Winston Billie's girlfriend, the harrowing incident began to unfold around 4 a.m. inside their residence. She was awakened by the sound of two gunshots coming from the living room. Shortly after, a distressed Billie entered her room, expressing confusion over the behavior of another man in the house, Chevel Cottonwood. Billie then returned to the living room, and an argument with Cottonwood ensued. The woman reported hearing another gunshot and seeing the flash of the discharge. Rushing to the living room, she discovered Billie on the floor, bleeding from what appeared to be a gunshot wound.
Navajo Police Department officers were dispatched to the Hovenweep area north of Aneth just before 5:30 a.m. after receiving a call about the gunfire. Upon their arrival, they were directed to a second location where they found Winston Billie's body. The subsequent investigation quickly focused on 34-year-old Chevel Cottonwood. In a coordinated effort, law enforcement utilized a drone and located Cottonwood hiding in some nearby bushes.
Chevel Cottonwood was taken into federal custody on Tuesday, the same day as the shooting. He has since been charged in federal court with second-degree murder within Indian Country, as well as being a felon in possession of a gun and ammunition. The case highlights the jurisdictional complexities of crimes committed on tribal lands, with the FBI's Salt Lake City office involved in the investigation and the charges being filed at the federal level.
