On September 10, 2025, Charles Charlie James Kirk, a 31-year-old White/Caucasian male, was fatally shot while speaking at an outdoor event on the campus of Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. Kirk, a prominent conservative political activist and co-founder of the organization Turning Point USA, was hosting the first stop of his "American Comeback Tour." As he engaged with the audience of about 3,000 people, a single shot was fired from a high-powered rifle, striking him in the neck.
The shot came from the roof of a building approximately 142 yards away. Attendees scattered in the ensuing chaos, and Kirk was rushed to Timpanogos Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The shooting immediately sparked a massive manhunt for the gunman. The FBI and the Utah Department of Public Safety led the investigation, releasing security camera images and video footage of a suspect dressed in a black shirt and hat, fleeing the scene. The investigation led them to a wooded area near the university where a rifle and ammunition were recovered. Some of the unused bullet casings reportedly had anti-fascist slogans written on them. In the initial hours after the shooting, two individuals were detained as persons of interest but were later released after it was determined they had no connection to the crime.
A breakthrough in the case came when a family member of a man named Tyler James Robinson contacted a friend, who then alerted the Washington County sheriff's office. The relative shared that Robinson, a 22-year-old from Utah, had confessed or implied his involvement in the killing. Robinson later surrendered to authorities. According to his family, he had become more political in the time leading up to the incident and had expressed a strong dislike for Kirk's viewpoints, believing he was spreading hate.
Tyler Robinson was arrested and charged with aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, and obstruction of justice. Prosecutors announced their intention to seek the death penalty, alleging the attack was a politically motivated assassination. Text messages reportedly sent by Robinson indicated that he targeted Kirk because he "had enough of his hatred." The killing was widely condemned by political figures as an act of escalating political violence in the United States.
