In the late afternoon of Sunday, May 18, 2025, the life of 16-year-old Khalief Webster was tragically cut short on a street in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. A sophomore at Upper Darby High School, the young male was known for his love of football and for his bright future, a future that would never be realized. On that day, Khalief was riding his miniature dirt bike near the intersection of Long Lane and Pine Street, a short distance from his home, when he encountered another teenager.
An
argument broke out between Khalief and the other individual. The confrontation escalated with shocking speed, ending when the other teen pulled out a gun. A single gunshot rang out, striking Khalief. The shooter was seen fleeing the scene, putting something in his waistband. Surveillance footage captured the harrowing moments, including audio of the suspect allegedly saying, 'You that young boul I seen the other day? You better not be,' just before the shot. Khalief was rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia, but he succumbed to his injuries, having been shot in the abdomen.
In the days that followed, the Upper Darby Police Department launched an intensive investigation. They released surveillance images of the suspect to the public, which quickly led them to identify 17-year-old Michael Nixon. After police executed two search warrants and spoke with members of his family, Nixon turned himself in to authorities on the following Tuesday night. He was subsequently charged as an adult with first-degree murder and other related offenses.
While a clear motive for the shooting remains under investigation, court documents suggest there may have been a prior dispute between the two teenagers. A witness told investigators that Nixon had mentioned a previous issue with Khalief. Following the shooting, Nixon was allegedly overheard on a cellphone call stating, 'I just shoot somebody in their chest, bro.' The senseless act left two families shattered and a community mourning the loss of a young life, prompting local officials and family members to decry the rising tide of youth gun violence. Nixon was taken into custody and denied bail, while authorities indicated that others who may have assisted him in hiding could also face charges.
