On a Tuesday afternoon in Winnsboro, South Carolina, the life of 37-year-old LaPorsha Jasma Farr was tragically cut short. On August 12, 2025, Fairfield County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of gunfire at a home on Durham Place Road in the Lake Wateree area. Inside, they discovered a grim scene: Farr, a Black female from Spartanburg, was unresponsive, having been shot in the neck.
A second victim at the scene had sustained a gunshot wound to the hip but was in stable condition after being transported to Prisma Health Richland for treatment. The Fairfield County Coroner pronounced Farr dead at the scene. The day of this violent incident would have been Farr's 38th birthday.
The investigation into Farr's death quickly led law enforcement to three male suspects who were present at the residence when an argument broke out. According to investigators, the altercation escalated, leading one of the men to produce a handgun and open fire. Within two days of the shooting, all three suspects were in custody. The alleged gunman, identified as Jerry L. Jones, 41, of Greenville, was apprehended after a three-hour standoff in Greenville County. He faces charges of murder, attempted murder, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Two other men, Benny L. Grady and William E. Mack, were arrested without incident and have been charged as accessories after the fact. While the immediate threat to the community was neutralized with the arrests, the investigation remains ongoing. The Fairfield County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, the Spartanburg and Greenville County Sheriff's Offices, and the Greenville and Greer Police Departments, worked together to bring a swift resolution to the case. Funeral services for LaPorsha Farr were held in her hometown of Spartanburg, where she was remembered by friends and family.
