In the late morning of a summer Saturday, the quiet of an Astor Avenue apartment building in Newark, New Jersey, was shattered by the sounds of screams and what neighbors believed were gunshots. Inside her home, 45-year-old Shaneequah Williams, a Black/African American woman, was fatally shot on August 9, 2025. When police responded to the scene at approximately 10:45 a.m., they found Williams suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of first responders, she was pronounced dead at her apartment.
The investigation into her death quickly pointed toward a domestic violence incident. Authorities identified her 42-year-old ex-boyfriend, Kasem McDonald, as the suspect. After the shooting, McDonald reportedly fled the scene in a light-colored vehicle, prompting a search. However, the manhunt was short-lived, as he surrendered to authorities at the Essex County Correctional Facility later that same evening.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office subsequently announced that McDonald had been arrested and was facing serious charges for his alleged role in Williams' death.
McDonald was charged with first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and a charge related to being a previously convicted felon in possession of a handgun. As the legal process began, the community grappled with the loss of a woman described by friends and neighbors as a 'bright light' and a 'beautiful soul.' Known for her warmth and work at a local lodge, Williams' death resonated deeply with those who knew her, who took to social media to share memories and express their grief over her sudden and tragic passing.
