In the summer of 2025, a family tragedy unfolded in Greenville, Mississippi, leaving one brother dead and the other facing a murder charge. On the evening of Wednesday, July 16th, police responded to a call about a shooting at a home in the 700 block of Cotton Drive. Inside the residence, they discovered 27-year-old Gervonte Johnson lying in a hallway with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was rushed to Delta Health Systems, but his life could not be saved. Gervonte Johnson was a Black male.
The circumstances that led to the fatal shooting remain unclear, but the investigation quickly focused on a member of Johnson's own family. His younger brother, 21-year-old Santwan Johnson, was identified as the alleged shooter. Greenville Police arrested Santwan and charged him with the murder of his brother.
Following his arrest, Santwan Johnson was booked into the Washington County Regional Correctional Facility to await his initial court appearance. The community was left to grapple with the news of a life cut short, and a family torn apart by an act of violence that transpired within their own home. The case is now set to proceed through the legal system.
