A young woman is found murdered 10 days after she vanished In the early summer of 1980, a 19-year-old Caucasian female named Karin Santos-Coy was embarking on a new chapter in her life in Nevada. Having recently enrolled in automotive training classes at the Sierra Nevada Job Corps in March, she was described as a happy, family-oriented young woman who never caused any trouble. On the evening of June 28, 1980, Karin and two of her classmates from the Job Corps decided to enjoy a night out at the Reno Rodeo Carnival.
Her friends recalled leaving her for a short time while she was watching the performances in the exhibition hall. When they returned just before midnight to head back, Karin was nowhere to be found. They initially thought she might have gotten a ride with someone else, but she never arrived back at the Job Corps center.
The last time anyone could recall seeing Karin, she was speaking with two barefooted men at the rodeo. This encounter would become the focal point of a future investigation, as her disappearance was completely out of character, alarming everyone who knew her. A missing person report was filed with the Reno Police Department, and the search for the young student began. The days turned into nearly two weeks with no sign of Karin, deepening the concern for her safety.
On July 10, 1980, the search came to a tragic end when hikers discovered a decomposing body along a dirt road on Red Rock Road, north of Reno. The remains were quickly identified as those of Karin Santos-Coy. She had been left nude in the remote area. An investigation determined that she had been killed by a single gunshot wound to the chest, and while it could not be definitively confirmed, authorities believe she was also sexually assaulted. The only personal item found with her was a gold chain with a medal of the Virgin Mary.
Investigators focused on the two unidentified men last seen with Karin. Eyewitnesses provided descriptions of the two potential suspects. One was a white male, estimated to be between 20 and 21 years old, standing about 5'10" and weighing around 130 pounds. He had medium-length, curly blonde hair and was wearing casual clothes but no shoes. The second man was also a white male, believed to be between 28 and 30 years old, standing 5'10" and weighing approximately 180 pounds. He had short brown hair and was dressed in a t-shirt and pants, and was also barefoot. Despite these descriptions, no arrests have ever been made in connection with the murder of Karin Santos-Coy, and her case remains an unsolved homicide.
