In the late summer of 2025, the life of 15-year-old Cotrevion Miller-Bridgeman was cut tragically short in Benton Harbor, Michigan. The Black/African American teenager, a male known affectionately as 'Cote,' was a student who had recently begun attending Benton Harbor High School. He was born on March 28, 2010, to Consuela Bridgeman and Barry Miller and was known for a vibrant personality that brought joy and laughter to those around him.
On the afternoon of September 17, 2025, gunfire
erupted on Buss Avenue near South Fair Avenue, and Cotrevion was struck. Officers from the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety discovered the wounded teen and initiated medical aid. He was transported from Corewell Health in St. Joseph to Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo for intensive treatment. Despite the efforts to save him, Cotrevion Miller-Bridgeman succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, September 20, 2025, three days after the shooting.
In the wake of the shooting, investigators began to piece together the events that led to Cotrevion's death. Their work led them to detain multiple individuals as they sorted through conflicting accounts. A search warrant was executed at an apartment on Buss Avenue, where authorities recovered a firearm. A 16-year-old was taken to the Berrien Juvenile Center, and a 20-year-old man was initially jailed for carrying a concealed weapon.
Following Cotrevion's death, the investigation intensified, and the Berrien County Prosecutor's Office upgraded the charges against the 20-year-old suspect. Louis Mayfield, age 20, was publicly identified and charged with a slate of serious offenses: open murder, assault with intent to murder, carrying a concealed weapon, and two counts of felony-firearm. The case against Mayfield marked a significant development in a tragedy that authorities described as an isolated incident. As the legal process began to unfold, with an initial court date set for October 1, 2025, the community was left to mourn the loss of a young life and grapple with the circumstances of his untimely passing. While an arrest was made, the investigation into what transpired on that September afternoon and the potential involvement of others who were present at the scene remained ongoing.
