Lamar Thomas, an 18-year-old Black male from Westland, Michigan, was fatally shot on the afternoon of Friday, September 26, 2025, in Ann Arbor. The incident took place around 1:15 p.m. near the intersection of Packard Street and Platt Road, outside a strip mall. Thomas, a recent high school graduate, was reportedly leaving a business when an exchange of gunfire occurred. He was struck and transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities have stated that they believe the shooting was a targeted act of violence rather than a random event.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police officers on traffic enforcement observed a vehicle speeding away from the scene. A brief pursuit ensued, which concluded when the fleeing car crashed into a tree at the intersection of Platt Road and Lorraine Street. Three individuals inside the vehicle were promptly taken into custody. The quick succession of the shooting, police chase, and arrests occurred within minutes, and nearby schools were temporarily placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure while the area was secured.
Within days of the incident, the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office announced charges against the three suspects. Nineteen-year-old Jahmal Jones was charged with open murder, carrying a concealed weapon, converting a semi-automatic firearm to a fully automatic weapon, fleeing and eluding, felony firearm, and two counts of resisting and obstructing a police officer. He was subsequently denied bond and jailed. The identities of the other two individuals arrested in connection with the shooting have not been widely publicized. The case then moved forward into the legal system with the charges announced by September 30, 2025, as the community mourned the loss of the young man to gun violence.
