In the early morning hours of July 6, 2025, a weekend getaway among friends at a lake house near Lake Cumberland in Pulaski County, Kentucky, took a tragic turn, ending the life of 35-year-old Thomas Wayne Dick of Aurora, Indiana. He was a male. What began as a holiday weekend trip ended in a fatal altercation with his lifelong friend, Anthony Scott Emerson, a 35-year-old from Batavia, Ohio.
The two men had traveled south to spend the Fourth of July weekend together. In a remote residence on Garland Road, an argument escalated between them. Emerson himself placed a call to 911 shortly after 1:30 a.m., telling the dispatcher that he had just shot his friend. In the recorded call, Emerson claimed that Dick had come at him and he felt he had no other choice. He admitted that he and Dick had been drinking prior to the incident. Emerson stated that although his friend was unarmed, he felt his life was in danger.
When law enforcement and emergency services arrived at the rural location, a journey that took them over 20 minutes, they found Thomas Wayne Dick deceased at the scene from a gunshot wound to his upper chest. Based on the evidence and Emerson's own admission, he was arrested and charged with murder. He was subsequently booked into the Pulaski County Detention Center, where he was held on a $1 million bond while the investigation continued.
The legal proceedings that followed, however, did not lead to a conviction. On September 3, 2025, a grand jury returned a 'no true bill,' indicating that they found insufficient evidence to formally indict Anthony Scott Emerson on the murder charge. The decision was reportedly based on a stand your ground defense. As a result, Emerson was released from custody. The outcome left the family of Thomas Wayne Dick devastated and searching for what they believe is justice for his death. His sister has been vocal about their heartbreak and their mission to find new information that could lead to the case being presented to a grand jury once more.
