Demingo Williams, a 19-year-old Black/African American man from North Chicago, Illinois, was fatally shot during the early morning hours of July 12, 2025, while he was inside a residence in the 2200 block of Kemble Avenue. At about 1:05 a.m., North Chicago police officers and firefighters were dispatched to the home after a report of a shooting. Emergency radio traffic indicated that Williams had been upstairs when he was struck. When officers entered the residence, they found him unconscious, barely breathing and suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Officers immediately began lifesaving efforts, including CPR, while emergency medical personnel prepared to transport him.
Investigators determined that the gunfire had come from outside the residence. The home was struck multiple times as an unknown shooter or shooters fired rounds into it, and one of those bullets struck Williams in the chest. Authorities did not report that Williams had been outside, involved in a confrontation, or exchanging gunfire; the available reporting describes him as being inside the house when the shots penetrated the residence. By the time police arrived, whoever fired the shots had already fled. A second person at the scene was reportedly suffering from shock and was transported by ambulance to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan.
Williams was rushed from the Kemble Avenue residence to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, a Level 1 trauma center. Despite the attempts to save him, he was pronounced dead in the emergency room shortly after 2 a.m. An autopsy performed the following Monday by the Lake County Coroner's Office determined that he died from a gunshot wound to the chest. The killing became the second homicide reported in North Chicago during 2025 and the ninth homicide reported in Lake County at that point in the year.
The North Chicago Police Department investigated the killing with assistance from the Lake County Major Crime Task Force. Authorities initially described the perpetrator as an "offender or offenders," indicating that investigators had not publicly determined whether one person or multiple people fired into the house. No publicly identified suspect was named in the reporting, and no description of a suspected shooter, getaway vehicle, possible motive, or relationship between Williams and the person or people responsible was released. Investigators said the offender or offenders escaped before officers reached the scene, leaving the shooting under active investigation.
No arrest was announced in the immediate aftermath of Williams' death. On July 15, 2025, investigators specifically reported that no one was in custody and that the investigation remained ongoing, while other local reporting likewise stated that no arrests had been announced. Later publicly available reporting located on the case continues to identify the circumstances of Williams' death and the continuing investigation but does not report the arrest, charging, trial or conviction of any person for his killing.
