On March 9, 2011, Marcos Mendoza-Canil, a 33-year-old man, was fatally shot in Oakland, California. His death occurred during a particularly violent year for the city, which saw a spike in homicides. Mendoza-Canil was shot on the 1400 block of 92nd Avenue, a part of East Oakland that has experienced ongoing struggles with violence. His death, like many others, was linked to the broader issues of street violence affecting the city. Oakland law enforcement faced challenges solving many homicide cases from that period due to limited resources and witnesses.
