Saeed Salah, a 38-year-old male, was a man who had journeyed far in search of peace and a better life for his family. An immigrant from Eritrea, he had escaped the violence and repression of his home country, spending time in a refugee camp in Sudan before making the arduous trip to the United States. He settled in Dayton, a place he believed would offer the safety he craved. He worked diligently as a forklift operator, often taking on extra shifts to support his wife and daughter in Dayton, as well as two other children who were still abroad.
On the night of August 4, 2019, his quest for a peaceful existence was tragically cut short. Salah was enjoying a rare day off with a friend in Dayton's vibrant Oregon District. He was standing outside a nightclub when a gunman, 24-year-old Connor Betts, began a violent rampage. Armed with a semi-automatic rifle and wearing body armor, Betts opened fire on the crowded street, killing nine people in just over 30 seconds. Salah was one of the victims, sustaining fatal gunshot wounds to his torso.
The swift response of Dayton police officers at the scene prevented further loss of life. They engaged the shooter, and Betts was killed as he attempted to force his way into a crowded bar. As Betts was the sole perpetrator of the attack, there were no other arrests or suspects identified in the investigation that followed. The community, including the Sudanese Community of Greater Dayton, mourned the loss of Salah, remembering him as a kindhearted and hardworking man. His family and friends, who had celebrated his journey to a new life, were left to grieve a man who had endured so much only to have his life taken in a senseless act of violence.
