In the summer of 1991, a grim discovery was made in a rural pocket of Murray County, Oklahoma, forever altering the lives of a local family. On July 27th, the body of 40-year-old Ronnie St. Clair, a white male from the small town of Silo, was found near his car on a remote road. The scene immediately pointed towards a violent end, and an investigation was launched into what was clearly not a death by natural causes.
Authorities determined that Ronnie St. Clair had been fatally shot with a. 22-caliber rifle. As investigators delved deeper, the case grew more complex with the discovery of a second victim, 55-year-old William Henry Kelsey Jr. of Bokchito. Kelsey had been killed with a. 38-caliber weapon, and a strange and telling clue linked the two murders: the rifle that killed St. Clair was found near Kelsey's body, and vice versa. This exchange of weapons led law enforcement, including the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, to believe the deaths were connected, possibly as part of a contract-killing plot.
The investigation soon focused on a member of St. Clair's own family. His nephew, 33-year-old Michael Dale St. Clair of Durant, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of William Kelsey. While an arrest was made, the Murray County Sheriff at the time indicated that the search was not over, suggesting that at least one other individual was believed to be involved in the double homicide.
