In the early evening of March 10, 2011, a visit to relatives in a northeast Las Vegas neighborhood turned tragic for 24-year-old Sergio Lopez. At approximately 7:15 p.m., in the 5600 block of Lake Mead Boulevard, near Nellis Boulevard, Lopez was suddenly confronted by an armed individual. The encounter escalated quickly, and the unidentified person shot Lopez.
Following the shooting, the assailant fled the scene, heading eastbound on Lake Mead Boulevard.
Emergency services were called, but the wound proved fatal. The Las Vegas police began an investigation into the homicide, trying to piece together the events that led to the violent confrontation. In the immediate aftermath, a motive for the attack was not determined.
Despite the efforts of law enforcement, the case grew cold. No immediate arrests were made in the days following the shooting. As time passed, the investigation into the murder of Sergio Lopez remained open but without a resolution.
