Bernard Smith, a 38-year-old Black male, was shot to death on the evening of December 14, 2011, at the Parkview Pointe Apartments at 3665 Cambridge Street, just east of UNLV in central Las Vegas. Police were called around 6:39 p.m.; responding officers found him in a doorway after witnesses reported hearing five to six gunshots. His identity was not released that night, and initial reporting described only a male victim discovered at the complex.
Days later, authorities identified him as Bernard “Mike” Smith and noted he was believed to have been homeless; at the time of his death he wore a bright blue leather jacket and was known to frequent the area around the apartments.
Detectives said the investigation was ongoing and actively sought leads from the public. Coverage at the time did not name a suspect, and there were no immediate arrests reported; investigators also indicated they had been unable to locate witnesses the night of the shooting. Subsequent public reporting offers no indication that anyone was arrested or charged in Smith’s killing, leaving the case without a publicly identified suspect.
