On a summer day in 1982, the life of 24-year-old Debra Smith Taylor, a White female from Griswold, Connecticut, was tragically cut short. On June 15th, she and her husband found themselves in a vulnerable situation when their car ran out of gas near Danielson, Connecticut. In an effort to find help, the couple decided to split up, each walking in opposite directions in search of a gas station.
It was during this separation that Debra vanished.
Her disappearance remained a mystery for four months until a jogger made a grim discovery. Debra's skeletal remains were found in a wooded area, bringing the initial search for her to a devastating conclusion. An investigation into her death was launched, but for a time, the case grew cold, leaving her family with unanswered questions and a profound sense of loss.
The break in the case came years later with the confession of serial killer Michael Bruce Ross. While in custody for other crimes, Ross admitted to abducting, raping, and strangling Debra Smith Taylor. His confession painted a horrifying picture of her final moments. According to Ross, he came across Debra as she was walking alone on the side of the road, a chance encounter that sealed her fate.
Ross was ultimately convicted of the murders of several young women, including Debra. On June 5, 1987, he was sentenced to a total of 120 years in prison for the murders of Debra Taylor and another victim. His reign of terror, which claimed the lives of at least eight women in Connecticut and New York, ended with his execution by lethal injection on May 13, 2005.
