Keith Henry, a 9-year-old Caucasian boy, disappeared on July 12, 1963, from his neighborhood in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Described by his mother as "just an ordinary kid who went out to play with the other kids in the neighborhood," Keith was last seen walking along a street near his home. When asked where he was going, he simply replied, "Oh, somewhere." His family never saw him again.
His disappearance sparked the largest search effort for a missing person in Kitchener-Waterloo history, with police, firemen, militiamen, and volunteers scouring the area for days and weeks. Despite their efforts, Keith had vanished without a trace.
For nearly five years, the mystery of Keith's disappearance remained unsolved. His father suspected that someone in the community knew what had happened but was not speaking. In May 1968, the case took a shocking turn when authorities in Florida arrested Stanley Rice, a former Kitchener resident, for the murder of an 11-year-old boy named Nelson Williams. During questioning, Rice confessed to multiple murders, including the killing of 8-year-old Timothy Trask in Findlay, Ohio, in 1966, and Keith Henry in 1963. Rice, who was 20 years old at the time of Keith's disappearance, had befriended the young boy and lured him to the banks of the Grand River in Kitchener under the guise of an afternoon of fun.
According to Rice's confession, he had planned to kill Keith, a plan that another 9-year-old boy named Allan was aware of but had dismissed as a joke. As they prepared to leave the riverbank, Rice viciously attacked Keith with a knife and a rock before drowning him in the river. The next day, Rice and Allan returned to the scene and buried Keith's body along the riverbank. Allan, traumatized by what he had witnessed, kept the crime a secret out of fear. It was only after Rice's arrest in Florida that the truth came to light.
Following Rice's confession, police conducted extensive searches along the Grand River, hoping to recover Keith's remains. However, after five years of flooding, authorities theorized that the river had washed away any trace of the boy. Keith's mother later placed a memorial plaque for him in the family plot at Memory Gardens cemetery in Breslau, Ontario.
Rice was convicted of murder in Florida and sentenced to life in prison. He remained incarcerated until his death on November 3, 2007, at the age of 65. Despite his conviction, Keith Henry's body was never found, leaving his family without the closure they had long sought.
