An African-American man, 26-year-old Cleottus Harvey, was shot and killed in Las Vegas, Nevada, on January 21, 2014, in what police believe was a road rage incident. The shooting happened in the late afternoon, around 5:20 p.m., at the intersection of Tropicana Avenue and Rainbow Boulevard. Harvey was driving his white Buick with his two young children, a 3-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl, in the back seat.
According to police reports, a dark-colored compact car pulled up alongside
Harvey's vehicle while they were stopped at a red light. Witnesses stated that the driver of the other car, described as a white male, appeared to be speeding and driving recklessly before the confrontation. An argument ensued between the two drivers, which ended when the suspect fired multiple shots into Harvey's car, striking him in the chest.
After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene, heading westbound on Tropicana Avenue. Harvey's Buick rolled into the intersection, where it collided with two other vehicles before coming to a stop on the sidewalk. Harvey was transported to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His two children were found unharmed in the back of the car.
In the days following the shooting, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department made a public appeal for any information that could lead to the identification and arrest of the suspect. A makeshift memorial of flowers and other items was created by the community at the site of the shooting. Despite the public pleas and the ongoing investigation, no arrests have been made in the case, and the suspect remains at large.
