On the evening of March 5, 2025, Dallas police responded to a shooting incident in the 2600 block of The Mall. Upon arrival, officers discovered 45-year-old African American woman Zanthia Harris suffering from gunshot wounds inside an apartment. A pistol was found on the ground next to her. Emergency responders transported her to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
According to reports, Harris had been at a friend's apartment when she began calling the friend multiple
times, expressing concern over her husband's erratic behavior. The suspect, identified as 50-year-old John Harris, was reportedly acting irrationally, prompting Zanthia to ask him to leave. When the friend returned to the apartment after running errands, John Harris was waiting outside and admitted to shooting his wife. The friend entered the apartment and found Zanthia wounded before calling 911.
John Harris was arrested at the scene without incident. He later told police that he was paranoid and believed his wife was conspiring against him with other individuals. Authorities charged him with murder, and he was booked into the Dallas County Jail. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting remains ongoing.
