A second victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was found outside the apartment suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds and was immediately transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment.
Investigators determined that Brooks and the second victim had been engaged in a physical altercation inside the apartment before a third individual, identified as the suspect, intervened and opened fire. The suspect, whose name has not been released, was reportedly known to both victims. Brooks, who was born on June 15, 1987, in Forsyth County, North Carolina, leaves behind a grieving family, including his mother, Melvina Brooks, and father, Joe Lyons. He was also a devoted father to 11 children. His passing has deeply affected his loved ones and the community, with many expressing their sorrow and sharing memories of him. A memorial service was scheduled to take place on January 18, 2025, at St. John Baptist Church in Winston-Salem.
