On the night of December 13, 2024, a verbal altercation inside a Worcester cafe tragically escalated, ending the life of 27-year-old Carlos Mangual. A male resident of Worcester, Mangual was known for his infectious laughter and deep love for his two children. That evening, inside Guertin's Cafe on Grand Street, he and another man, 24-year-old Givenchy Smith, were involved in a dispute.
The argument spilled outside the cafe, where surveillance footage captured the deadly turn of events.
Smith allegedly went to his BMW, retrieved a firearm, and fired multiple shots at Mangual, who was struck by the gunfire. Worcester police responded to reports of gunshots around 10:15 p.m. and found Mangual unresponsive in the street. Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was a graduate of South High School and was remembered for his loyalty, kindness, and empathy towards his family and friends.
In a surprising development, approximately 20 minutes after the shooting, Givenchy Smith contacted the police and admitted his involvement. He provided details of the incident, including his identity and the weapon he used. Authorities arrested Smith at his residence on South Lenox Street without incident and recovered the handgun believed to have been used in the shooting.
Smith was subsequently arraigned on a charge of armed assault to murder and was held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing. During the hearing, prosecutors presented the surveillance footage and Smith's own admission as evidence.
