On the morning of January 1, 2025, 47-year-old African American woman Latoya Scrivens was fatally shot in Stockton, California. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. in the 2400 block of Gareth Circle. Emergency responders found Latoya with a gunshot wound to her upper torso; she was transported to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries. Authorities later identified her son, 20-year-old Jkwon Williams, as the suspect.
He was apprehended within hours of the shooting and taken into custody for questioning.
Williams was subsequently booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on suspicion of voluntary manslaughter and weapons charges. According to Chief Deputy District Attorney Elizabeth O’Hara, the shooting occurred inside a vehicle and was described as happening “upon a sudden quarrel and heat of passion.” During his initial court appearance on January 3, 2025, Williams appeared visibly emotional, often sobbing and covering his face. Over 20 family members attended the hearing, many of whom were also in tears. Williams did not enter a plea during this session and was appointed a public defender after indicating he could not afford legal representation. His next court date was scheduled for February 3, 2025.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, a memorial was established outside the Scrivens residence. The tribute included candles spelling out “RIP Toya,” red and white balloons, flowers, and photographs of Latoya and her son embracing. Messages such as “I love you to the moon and back mom” adorned poster boards, reflecting the deep affection held by family and friends. Some relatives expressed on social media that they believed the shooting was accidental, emphasizing the close bond between Latoya and Jkwon. Despite these sentiments, the legal proceedings continued, with Williams facing serious charges related to his mother's death.
