On January 1, 2025, tragedy struck in Kissimmee, Florida, when 56-year-old Carmen Rosa Neira Ochoa lost her life due to a stray bullet from celebratory gunfire. Ochoa, a Hispanic woman, was enjoying New Year's Eve festivities with her two daughters on the back porch of her home when she was suddenly struck by a bullet that pierced through the screen enclosure. The incident occurred just after midnight, as fireworks lit up the sky and residents rang in the new year. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by her daughters and first responders, Ochoa succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
Authorities launched an investigation into the fatal shooting, which led them to 44-year-old Carlos Manuel Tejada, a resident who lived across the lake from Ochoa’s home. Tejada had allegedly fired a gun into the air in celebration of the new year, unaware that one of the bullets would travel across the water and strike Ochoa. Law enforcement officials recovered 11 firearms from Tejada’s residence during their investigation. On January 17, 2025, Tejada was arrested and charged with manslaughter by culpable negligence. Kissimmee Police Chief Robert Anzueto addressed the public, emphasizing the dangers of celebratory gunfire and stating that while Tejada may not have intended to harm anyone, his reckless actions led to the tragic death of a community member.
