The incident occurred late at night on February 28, 2025, in an unincorporated area between Gardena and Compton. Authorities responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 11:58 p.m. on the 13100 block of Jarvis Avenue, near Main and San Pedro streets in Willowbrook.
Upon arrival, they discovered Elijah, a ninth-grade student at Centennial High School in Compton, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was swiftly transported to a hospital, where he was formally pronounced dead at 12:35 a.m. on March 1, 2025.
Elijah, described as a bright and loving young man full of promise, leaves behind his grieving mother, Mercedes, and two younger siblings, Z'Khiyah, 10, and Niko, 1. His sudden and violent death has devastated his family and community, prompting an outpouring of support and condolences. A fundraiser was organized to assist his family with funeral expenses and to honor his memory.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner classified Elijah's death as a homicide, confirming that the cause was a gunshot wound to the chest.
